OBJECTIVE:
The City of Columbia Police Department established the Citizens Academy in response to the citizen requests to know more about the Criminal Justice System and what types of crimes are occurring in their communities. For this purpose, the Citizens Police Academy was established. The goals of the Citizens Academy is multi-faceted. Some of these goals include the following:

  • Explain the Criminal Justice system to participants.

  • Give participants the opportunity to meet the men and women who work for the City of Columbia Police Department.

  • Introduce participants to the special teams that support the line officers, including: K9 Unit, Narcotics Unit, (PACE) Pro-Active Community Enforcement Team, etc.

  • Help participants become ambassadors, another pair of eyes for the City of Columbia Police Department.

  • Describe the inner workings of the City of Columbia Police Department.

  • Make the participants aware of crimes occurring in their community; and

  • Give participants a first-hand look at law enforcement by allowing them to ride along with Officers while on patrol.

  • Give an option to those wanting to do more with the CPD to join the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.

The Citizens Police Academy is a 10 week program that attempts to accomplish all of the above-mentioned goals. The class meets each week on Tuesday nights for a two-hour session. An Officer of the Columbia Police Department, who explains his or her field of specialization, teaches each class. In the 10th week, participants take part in a graduation exercise and as an added bonus, a ride along with an Officer.
